What does a ketovore plate actually look like?

Updated Sep 20, 2026 ยท 1009 words ยท General information, not medical advice.

A ketovore plate is one large protein anchor, the fat that came with it, and a small side of low-carb plants โ€” in practice roughly three-quarters of the plate by weight is animal food, and the plant side is about a cup of something green. There is no ratio to memorize beyond that, because what decides whether a day was ketovore is the net carb total, usually kept under about 20 g. The plate shape is just the easiest way to land there without weighing anything.

Build it in order: protein, then fat, then plants

The order matters more than the proportions, because whatever goes down first is what you actually finish.

The protein anchor

Six to eight ounces of cooked meat, fish or eggs per meal โ€” a portion about the size and thickness of your palm, or four to five eggs. That lands around 40โ€“55 g of protein, so two or three meals built this way put most adults inside the 1.6โ€“2.2 g per kg of goal bodyweight range without any tracking. Ribeye, ground beef, chicken thighs, salmon, pork shoulder: the cut matters little, the size matters a lot.

The fat

On ketovore, fat is mostly a passenger. A ribeye, chicken thighs with the skin and 80/20 ground beef all arrive with their own. Add more โ€” butter on the steak, oil over the greens โ€” if the cut was lean or you are hungry two hours later. Fat is the lever you adjust to fill calories, not a target to maximize.

The plant side

About a cup of a low-carb vegetable, half an avocado, or a handful of leaves with oil and salt. Its job is to make the meal taste like a meal โ€” not to hit a fiber quota. It is there so you keep eating this way for more than three weeks.

What the plant side actually costs

This is where ketovore is won or lost, because vegetables are not one category. Net carbs are total carbohydrate minus fiber, from standard USDA per-100 g values, rounded up:

Plant foodTypical portionNet carbs
Spinach, raw2 cups (60 g)~1 g
AvocadoHalf a medium (70 g)~1 g
Mushrooms, white1 cup (70 g)~2 g
Zucchini1 cup sliced (113 g)~2 g
Cauliflower1 cup (107 g)~3 g
Tomato1 medium (123 g)~3 g
Onion1/4 cup chopped (40 g)~3 g
Broccoli1 cup chopped (91 g)~4 g
Carrot1 medium (60 g)~4 g
BlueberriesHalf a cup (74 g)~9 g

Half a cup of blueberries is close to half a ketovore day, and a quarter cup of onion in the pan costs what a whole cup of zucchini does. Nothing here is forbidden โ€” these are prices, and a 20 g budget is small enough that prices matter.

Three example days

Each runs about 8โ€“14 g of net carbs for the day, leaving room for coffee with cream.

Day one โ€” the simple one

Day two โ€” cooking for someone else

Day three โ€” nearly carnivore

That spread is the point of the track: it sits between carnivore and keto and you slide along it week to week. The ketovore recipes list net carbs per serving, as do the dinner and breakfast collections.

Where "adding a little veg back" goes wrong

Most people arrive here from keto or back from strict carnivore โ€” the ketovore explainer covers the track itself โ€” and the same five mistakes show up either way.

The short version

  1. Palm-sized protein first, 6โ€“8 oz cooked, every meal.
  2. The fat that came with the cut, plus more only if you are hungry later.
  3. About a cup of a cheap-in-carbs plant โ€” leaves, avocado, zucchini, mushrooms, broccoli.
  4. Keep the day under about 20 g net carbs, and check the sauce.
  5. Salt it properly, especially in the first two weeks.

None of this is medical advice. If you take medication for diabetes or blood pressure, talk to your doctor before cutting carbs this far โ€” those doses are often set around a higher-carb diet and may need adjusting.

In the app, build the plate once and the tracker carries the net carbs for the day, so the 20 g budget is a number you can see at lunch instead of a guess at bedtime โ€” start free.

Questions people ask

What percentage of a ketovore plate should be meat?

Roughly three-quarters of the plate by weight, though the percentage is a proxy rather than a rule. What matters is a 6โ€“8 oz cooked protein anchor at each meal and a plant side small enough to keep the day under about 20 g of net carbs.

Can you eat vegetables on ketovore?

Yes โ€” that is the difference between ketovore and carnivore. Keep to the cheap-in-carbs ones: leafy greens, avocado, zucchini, mushrooms, asparagus, broccoli. Onion, carrot, tomato and winter squash are not banned, they just cost several grams per small portion.

How many carbs a day is ketovore?

Most people work to under about 20 g of net carbs a day โ€” total carbohydrate minus fiber. There is no official ceiling because ketovore is a way of eating rather than a certified diet, but under 20 g is the usual working number.

Is ketovore just keto with more meat?

In practice, close to it. The difference is where the plate starts: ketovore builds from a protein anchor and adds a small plant side, while standard keto often builds from fat and allows nut flours, sweeteners and larger vegetable portions.

Do I need to eat vegetables to get enough fiber?

No. Fiber is not an essential nutrient in the way protein and fat are, and plenty of people do well on very little. Eat the plant side because you enjoy it and it makes the meal work, not to hit a quota.
