Carnivore vs keto: what's actually different
Keto is defined by a carbohydrate limit; carnivore is defined by a food list. Both keep carbs low enough that the body runs mainly on fat, so the metabolic effect overlaps heavily. The real differences are in what you eat day to day, how much fiber and variety you get, how easy each one is to keep up, and how much long-term evidence exists behind each.
The side-by-side
| Keto | Carnivore | |
|---|---|---|
| What defines it | Net carbs low enough for ketosis, usually 20โ50g/day | Animal foods only: meat, fish, eggs, some dairy |
| Allowed foods | Meat, eggs, dairy, low-carb vegetables, nuts, seeds, berries, oils, low-carb baking | Meat, fish, eggs, butter, cheese; salt; water. No plants. |
| Net carbs | 20โ50g | Close to zero (dairy and eggs contribute a little) |
| Fiber | Moderate, from vegetables, nuts, seeds | None |
| Electrolyte needs | Higher than a standard diet | Higher still โ no plant sources of potassium or magnesium |
| Meal planning | More work: recipes, substitutes, tracking | Very little: choose a protein, cook it, salt it |
| Eating out | Manageable almost anywhere | Steak, burger without the bun, eggs; limited but doable |
| Research base | Decades of trials on ketogenic diets for epilepsy, weight, blood sugar | Mostly surveys and case reports; few controlled trials |
What they share
At under about 50g of carbohydrate a day, insulin stays low, the liver produces ketones, and the body gets most of its energy from fat. That is true whether the fat comes from ribeye or from avocado. Both diets tend to reduce appetite โ people eat fewer calories without deliberately restricting โ which is the main reason both produce weight loss. Both raise the need for sodium, potassium, and magnesium, because low insulin makes the kidneys excrete more sodium and the others follow. The electrolytes guide covers that in detail, and it applies to both.
Where keto is stronger
Variety and long-term adherence
A diet you can eat for years beats a diet you can eat for a month. Keto's food list is wide. Vegetables, cheese, nuts, berries, olive oil, low-carb versions of familiar dishes โ it can look like normal eating with the bread removed. That flexibility is why keto is the one most people manage to sustain.
Evidence
Ketogenic diets have been studied for around a century in epilepsy and for decades in weight loss and type 2 diabetes. Controlled trials exist, with known effects on blood sugar, triglycerides, and body weight. That does not make keto right for everyone, but it means the expected outcomes are reasonably well mapped.
Fiber and gut function
Keto keeps fiber in the diet. For people whose digestion depends on it, that is a real advantage, not a theoretical one.
Where carnivore is stronger
Simplicity
There is almost nothing to plan. Buy meat, cook meat, salt meat. No recipes, no macros to balance, no reading labels. For people who find that food decisions are the hard part of dieting, removing the decisions is the whole point.
Satiety per calorie
Meals built on meat and eggs are filling. Many people on carnivore report that hunger simply drops, and that they stop snacking without deciding to. The high protein intake is a large part of that, and it also helps protect muscle in a calorie deficit โ see how much protein on low-carb.
Elimination
Carnivore functions as an elimination diet. People with food sensitivities sometimes use it to establish a baseline, then add foods back one at a time to find what causes problems. Whether the improvement comes from removing a specific food or simply from removing processed food generally is usually impossible to tell from the outside.
Where the evidence runs out
This is the part most comparison articles skip. Carnivore has very little controlled research. The largest data set is a self-reported survey of people already following the diet, which tells you what satisfied carnivores say about themselves and nothing about the people who tried it and stopped. Long-term effects of a zero-fiber, zero-plant diet on the gut, on blood lipids, and on nutrient status are not well characterized. That is not an argument that carnivore is harmful; it is an argument that anyone doing it long-term is ahead of the data, and should get standard bloodwork now and then rather than assuming.
Keto's evidence is broader but not unlimited either. Most trials run months, not decades, and the "keto" in a trial is often a specific supervised protocol rather than what people eat at home.
Who each one suits
- Keto suits people who want a wide food list, who cook, who eat with other people, and who want the diet with the most published data behind it.
- Carnivore suits people who want zero decisions, who do well on high protein, who are running an elimination experiment, or who have tried keto and found the plant-based side of it kept pulling them toward snacks and treats.
- Neither is a substitute for medical care. If you take medication for blood sugar or blood pressure, a sharp cut in carbohydrate can change what dose you need within days, and that needs a clinician involved.
The middle path: ketovore
Most people who bounce between the two eventually settle in between. Ketovore keeps carnivore's animal-first plate and adds a small side of low-carb plants โ greens, avocado, olive oil, a few berries. Net carbs stay under 20g, protein stays high, the meal planning stays simple, and the diet is easier to keep up in a restaurant or at someone's house. It is the option to try if keto felt like too much work and carnivore felt like too little food.
How to actually decide
Pick the one you can imagine eating in six months. Run it for three full weeks โ long enough for the water-weight drop of the first week to finish and for real fat loss to show up on the scale and the tape measure. Then judge by three things: are you hungry, is the weight moving, and do you feel fine. If two of those are wrong, move one step along the line โ carnivore to ketovore, or keto to ketovore โ and run it again. Browse the carnivore recipes and the keto recipes to see what a week of each actually looks like on the plate.
The app tracks all three as separate tracks โ Carnivore, Ketovore, Keto โ so switching is one tap, and the recipes, macros, and portions follow you to whichever one you land on.
Questions people ask
Is carnivore just a stricter keto?
Not quite. Both are very low in carbohydrate, and both usually put you in ketosis, but carnivore removes all plant foods rather than limiting them. That changes fiber intake, food variety, and how the diet is planned. Keto is defined by a carb limit; carnivore is defined by a food list.
Which is better for weight loss, carnivore or keto?
Neither has been shown to beat the other in controlled trials. Both lower carbohydrate and, for most people, reduce appetite, which is where the weight loss comes from. The better diet is the one you can eat for months without feeling deprived.
Do you need fiber on carnivore?
There is no established minimum fiber requirement for a diet with no plant foods, and many people report normal digestion on carnivore. Others do worse without it. It is an individual response, and the honest answer is that long-term data on zero-fiber diets is limited.
