The first 30 days of carnivore, week by week

Updated Oct 23, 2026 · 997 words · General information, not medical advice.

The first 30 days of carnivore follow a predictable shape: week one is water and salt, week two is digestion, week three is when appetite and energy settle, and week four is the first honest look at what actually changed. Almost everyone who quits does so in the first ten days, almost always for something temporary and fixable. Knowing which week you are in tells you whether to adjust or wait.

Week 1: water, salt, and a scale that lies

Cutting carbohydrate to near zero drains glycogen — the body's stored carbohydrate, roughly 400–500 g across muscle and liver when you are topped up. Each gram of glycogen is stored with about three grams of water, so emptying the tank releases several pounds of water weight in a few days. Lower insulin also tells the kidneys to stop holding sodium, and more water leaves with it.

So the scale drops fast, and none of it is fat. Expect 4–8 lb in week one depending on your size and your old diet. It stays off while you stay low-carb, but it is a one-time event, not your rate of loss.

That same sodium loss causes "keto flu": headache, fatigue, light-headedness on standing, calf cramps at night. It is the biggest cause of quitting in week one, and it is an electrolyte shortfall, not the diet failing. Add roughly a teaspoon of salt a day on top of normal cooking — salted broth is the easiest delivery — from day one rather than waiting for the headache. The electrolyte guide has the rest, magnesium included.

Eat enough. Appetite often falls off a cliff in week one, and under-eating protein on top of a water flush is how you end up exhausted. Aim for 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kg of goal bodyweight — 110–170 g a day for most adults, and the protein guide has the arithmetic.

Week 2: your gut renegotiating

Week two is usually digestive, and it goes one of two ways. Loose stools are the common one, and it is almost always too much fat too fast: fat digestion depends on bile and pancreatic lipase, and both scale up to the load, but not overnight. Pull the added fat back — 85/15 ground beef and eggs rather than butter on everything — and build up over a couple of weeks.

The other direction is fewer bowel movements. With no fiber going in there is far less stool volume coming out, so every second or third day is a normal new baseline, not constipation. Constipation means hard, painful, or straining — and that is usually water and sodium rather than fiber (see the digestion guide).

Week two is also when the food starts feeling repetitive. That is a logistics problem, not a willpower problem: rotate beef, lamb, pork, eggs, and fatty fish, and change the cooking method rather than the ingredient. The carnivore breakfast and carnivore dinner collections exist to solve this week.

Week 3: the part people stay for

By week three most of the adjustment is behind you, and what changes is hunger rather than the scale.

Meals get further apart. Protein and fat are the most satiating macronutrients, and with no carbohydrate there is no post-meal glucose swing to produce the 3pm crash. Many people drop to two meals a day without deciding to — fine, as long as the protein target still gets hit.

Snacking mostly stops, because the usual snack trigger is a blood-sugar dip rather than a real energy need. Training energy returns around now too, though very short, very hard efforts — heavy sets, sprints — can stay slightly below your old numbers, because those run on glycogen specifically.

Week 4: the first honest read

Four weeks in, the water move is done and the scale is closer to honest. Judge the month on what a single weigh-in cannot fake:

A reasonable rate after week one is about 0.5–1% of bodyweight a week. If week four shows nothing on the scale or the tape, the answer is usually calories from added fat — the carbs are already gone.

It is allowed to land short of strict. Ketovore — mostly animal foods plus a few low-carb vegetables and aromatics — is where most people who say "carnivore" actually live, and it keeps nearly all of the effect with less friction. The carnivore vs keto comparison has the trade-offs; the carnivore collection has the food either way.

The short version

  1. Week 1: salt from day one; the fast drop is water.
  2. Week 2: too much added fat causes the gut trouble — back it off.
  3. Week 3: hunger and energy settle; meals spread out on their own.
  4. Week 4: judge it on a 7-day average and a tape measure.
  5. Hit protein every week. It is the one number that matters all month.

None of this is medical advice — and if you take medication for diabetes, blood pressure, or kidney disease, talk to your doctor before you start, because cutting carbohydrate this sharply can change what dose is right for you.

Questions people ask

How much weight do you lose in the first month of carnivore?

Week one is usually 4–8 lb, and almost all of it is water released as glycogen empties — each gram of stored carbohydrate holds about three grams of water with it. After that, a reasonable fat-loss rate is about 0.5–1% of bodyweight per week.

Why do I have diarrhea on the carnivore diet?

Usually too much added fat too quickly. Bile and pancreatic lipase scale up to the fat load, but over weeks rather than days. Cut the added butter and tallow, lean on 85/15 ground beef and eggs, and build the fat back up gradually.

When does carnivore get easier?

For most people, week three. The electrolyte adjustment is done, appetite has settled, and meals naturally spread further apart because there is no post-meal glucose swing driving a mid-afternoon crash.

Why do most people quit carnivore in the first two weeks?

Two reasons, both fixable: the sodium-loss headache and fatigue in days two to five, and digestive trouble from too much fat in days seven to fourteen. Neither is the diet failing, and both resolve in a day or two once you address the cause.

Do I have to go strictly carnivore to get the benefit?

No. Ketovore — mostly animal foods with a small amount of low-carb vegetables and aromatics — keeps most of the effect with much less friction, and it is how most people who say "carnivore" actually eat.
